Background -

Barnsley Hospital - a 450-bed teaching and research hospital - is among the leading NHS trusts in the country. Over the past 18 months the hospital has undergone a £1.5m refurbishment programme to improve facilities for patients and visitors. So far £500,000 has been spent on new medical and surgical equipment with a further £615,000 earmarked for this purpose.

The problem -

The mortuary roof was undergoing a complete refurbishment, which meant that all of the existing mechanical and electrical equipment was being replaced. As part of the project a new waterproofing system was also required, however the roofing contractors would need to work around the other tradesmen and the mortuary below would also remain in use. This meant that a heat applied system would not be suitable due to the risk of fire.

The solution -

A Cold Fusion Bonded Built-Up Roofing System from Liquid Plastics was specified for the project. The full system consists of a Vapour Control Layer, insulation, a Carrier Membrane, and a seamless Decothane Delta 25 waterproof ‘cap sheet’ in Slate Grey. The system is adhered using Liquid Plastics’ revolutionary cold fusion adhesive – Decostik®. Skid Inhibiting Grit was also added to the Decothane to ensure the roof could be safely accessed by pedestrians.

The benefits -

The Liquid Plastics’ system was chosen because both the client and architect had previous experience of the product and were confident it would perform as required. The finished system is also completely seamless and completely cold applied, thus Once installed it is guaranteed to last for at least 25 years.
