background -
Geography has a long tradition at Cambridge University, with the first lecturer appointed in 1888. In 1931 the first Professor was appointed, and in 1933 the Department moved into its own accommodation. That building, which now constitutes the eastern end of the Department, was considerably extended in the 1930’s with the construction of new lecture theatres and laboratories. In the 1980’s, the building was further extended with the addition of a top floor to provide a new laboratory for computing, remote sensing and geographical information systems. And in 1999 the Department expanded again, to occupy two floors in an adjacent building where new laboratories, seminar rooms and offices are housed.
the problem -
The University Estate Management team began a period of refurbishment to the roofs of the geography department buildings, which included three roofs to be completed over a two year period. The works had to be completed during term, therefore a cold applied waterproofing system was required.
the solution -
A Decothane Delta 25 system from Liquid Plastics was specified. This is a cold, liquid applied system that cures to form a completely seamless waterproof membrane. The full system consists of a Decothane Base Coat, reinforced with Reemat Premium glass fibre matting, and completed with two applications of Decothane Top Coat. The Decothane waterproofing was applied directly to the existing asphalt, without restrictions to the guarantee – thus reducing cost and keeping disruption to an absolute minimum. New Decolight rooflights were also installed.
the benefits -
Decothane is completely cold applied; therefore works could be safely carried out during term time without causing any risk of fire. Its liquid application also makes Decothane incredibly versatile and able to waterproof complex detail areas, such as around plant and equipment without having to disconnect. This also helps to reduce contract costs, duration, and disruption. Once installed Decothane provides a completely seamless finish and is aesthetically pleasing, particularly important for areas that are overlooked. Furthermore, because the system was installed by a Quality Assured Contractor, a single point guarantee could be issued covering materials and labour for 25 years.
